Queen of Summer (Book Seven of the Mortal Champion)
Chapter Two: Autumn’s Despair
Akiko trembled as the mountain stopped shaking. Her friends gathered around the ruins of the cabin. Heat billowed out from Professor Sommer, driving back the snow falling upon the mountainside and creating a shelter. Red energy flashed about her. She was the Avatar of Summer.
Akiko was the Avatar of Autumn.
The Avatar of Autumn betrays her friends to save her love.
Guilt filled Akiko. The young, Japanese woman trembled. Everyone stared at her with disgust. They all knew she had worked with Ellyllon against them. She had led them all to this cabin so Ellyllon could awaken the mountain and kill them all.
Does it matter that I would have died with them? Akiko knew it wouldn’t. None of her excuses would matter. She had made her choice. Ellyllon had captured her boyfriend, Evan, and Akiko had decided that his life was more valuable than Gunnar’s, Maeve’s, and the rest.
Felicity fixed Akiko with a baleful stare, her blue eyes shimmering. Green wind swirled around Felicity, stirring her blonde pigtails. She brimmed with the youthful passion of Spring. Her boyfriend, Brad, stood at her side, his arms folded before him. Magda, a flaming sword still clutched in her hand, stood beside her girlfriend Professor Sommer. The Hispanic woman’s eyes were flints stabbing into Akiko.
Evan wrapped his arms around Akiko as Gunnar stepped away from her. Even Gunnar’s multicolored eyes filled with hurt. He was tall and broad-shouldered, built like a Viking warrior with flowing, blond hair. The Balance glimmered on his arm, a mix of silver and gold. Akiko could feel it pulsing. She drew on its power, using the earthy, deathly powers of Autumn.
“Gunnar!” Mindy and Maeve both exclaimed, flying to their lover. The Avatar of Winter and the Pixie clung to Gunnar. Maeve burned with all of Summer’s passion and Mindy dazzled with all of Winter’s beauty.
Akiko squirmed in Evan’s arms, but her Black boyfriend refused to let her go. “I’m finally free,” Evan whispered. “There was always a part of me that remembered who I loved, Akiko.” His arms tightened.
For weeks, Evan had been Corrigan’s spy, dominated and forced to betray Gunnar and the rest. Not like me. I had a choice whether or not I would betray my friends. When Corrigan died, Ellyllon had entered the Mortal World and captured Evan, holding his life hostage against Akiko’s cooperation.
“Get away from her, Evan!” hissed Felicity.
“What?” Evan said.
“Evan,” Akiko whispered. She struggled to find the words. How do I explain what I did?
“She’s the reason we almost died!” Magda added. “That little bitch sold us out.”
“Magda,” Professor Sommer said, pulling on her arm.
Gunnar’s eyes were still hard.
“We could have helped you,” Maeve said, tears brimming in the Pixie’s green eyes. “We would have helped you. You just had to trust us. Come to us.”
The tear was hot as it rolled down Akiko’s cheek. “I couldn’t,” she sobbed. “I had no choice.” Her lie ran hollow.
“What are you guys talking about?” Evan asked.
“She betrayed us!” Mindy snapped. “I thought we were friends. All those times we hung out and talked, sharing our secrets and crying on each other’s shoulders, and then you lured us up here to die!”
Akiko flinched.
“Now hold on!” Evan roared, pushing Akiko behind him and glaring at Mindy. “You’re one to talk about betrayal. You fucking let the entire fraternity gangbang you at that party. Do you have any idea what you did to Gunnar? You broke his heart, bitch! Why the fuck is this whore even here, man?”
“You don’t know what you’re talking about,” Gunnar growled, his voice thick with anger.
“Mindy was under Corrigan’s geas,” Maeve said.
“Like I was,” Felicity nodded. “Corrigan put her slut curse on Mindy and who knows how many other girls. Gunnar freed her.”
“But there was no magic on you, Akiko,” Magda said.
“Maybe there was,” Professor Sommer said.
“I didn’t detect any,” Gunnar growled. “Akiko made her choice. She chose to help Ellyllon. She lured us out here. We all almost died.”
“Thousands almost died,” Brad added.
Akiko closed her eyes, shuddering in disgust. I’m a monster.
Evan turned to stare at her. His heavy eyebrows furrowed. “Did you really…do this?”
Akiko took a step back, her body trembling. “I…I did.”
Evan almost flinched. “You…you betrayed our friends?”
“For you, Evan. She was going to kill you.” Akiko swallowed and took another step back. The snow chilled her feet.
“She was planning on killing him anyways!” Felicity shouted. “Ellyllon tried to set off the volcano. Evan would have died with the rest of us! If you weren’t so stupid, you would have realized you couldn’t trust an Unseelie Fey!”
“Jesus, Akiko,” Evan groaned.
Akiko had always known what the price of her betrayal would be—Evan’s love. She was willing to pay it to know he was alive. That he was happy and free. That was worth any price. Everyone could hate her. Evan could hate her.
But all that mattered was he lived.
Akiko turned and dashed into the snowy forests. It was time to end her life. Then Evan would be free.
“Akiko!” Evan shouted as she ran off into the snowy woods.
With a thought, she reached into the earth and raised a wall of stone. Akiko couldn’t stand their hate-filled gazes upon her anymore. She ran faster, raising a path of stone out of the snowy ground for her to run across. She ran and ran, her tears freezing on her cheeks. The cold seeped into her body. Her lungs burned.
She fell from her path into the snow, stared up at the gray sky, and let the cold take her.

“Fucking bitch,” Felicity muttered. “Good riddance.”
Gunnar almost agreed with her.
A stone wall thrust up in Akiko’s wake, spanning a hundred feet or more in either direction. Her shoes smacked on wet stone, fading as she sprinted off into the wood. The hellhound inside Gunnar snarled, burning to choice Akiko down and savage her flesh. Akiko had betrayed them and deserved to pay. Gunnar ignored the dark impulse. She was necessary.
“She’s the Avatar of Autumn,” Gunnar growled.
“We need her, right,” Mindy sighed.
Maeve’s wings fluttered. She rested her head against Gunnar’s arm. “We do. The poor thing. How did I miss her pain? She loves Evan so much. I’m not sure she really had a choice.”
“So we should just forgive her?” Magda demanded. She was a Knight of Summer, her passions burning bright. Maeve burned with the same bright passions. They had once compelled his fiancee to try to kill Corrigan after the Bodath’s attack.
“Maybe,” Maeve whispered.
“What the fuck is going on?” Evan demanded. He was a tall, Black man. He trembled with rage. His eyes swept across them. “Gunnar, man, I need to know.”
“Ellyllon used her,” Gunnar sighed, some of his anger fading. The hellhound tried to hold on to it. “She’s another damned victim of the Unseelie Fey. Mab has a lot to answer for.”
“Mab?” Evan shook his head. “No, this shit doesn’t matter. My girlfriend is out there. It’s a fucking blizzard.”
“Good,” Felicity said and Magda nodded.
“She’s the Avatar of Autumn,” Gunnar added. “We will need her.”
“Really?” Felicity demanded. “Autumn so…foul. Everything dies in the Fall.”
“Death feeds Spring’s rebirth,” Mindy said.
Evan shook his head. “That doesn’t matter. We need to go after her.”
“We do,” Maeve nodded, her wings fluttering. She flew over to Evan, landing naked and lovely beside him. Maeve hugged him. “I’m glad you are free.”
Evan froze, his eyes shooting to Gunnar. Evan had desired Maeve since he met her—any guy would—but he never would do anything. And now she clung to him naked and lovely. The guy was clearly uncomfortable.
“It’s okay. Hug her back,” Gunnar answered.
Evan put his arms around Maeve’s slim waist. Her wings hummed, shimmering with silver. Maeve tossed back her red hair as she stood on her tiptoes and kissed Evan on the mouth. Maeve was always so affectionate. The sight stirred Gunnar’s passion.
“Damn,” Evan blinked when Maeve broke the kiss.
“Let’s go find Akiko before she hurts herself.”
“This is a mistake,” Felicity muttered. “She betrayed us once. All the Fey have to do is capture Evan, and she’ll do it again.”
“Maybe,” Gunnar said.
“We have to risk it,” Mindy sighed. “Besides, haven’t we all have done something stupid for love.”
“Stupid,” Felicity muttered. “Yeah, leading us all up here to our deaths is the same as losing your head over a boy.”
Gunnar reached into the Balance and tore a hole into the stone wall. “Let’s go get her. All of us.”
“I’m not forgiving her,” Felicity hissed.
“Neither am I,” Gunnar answered. “But I understand why she did it.”
“Come on,” Evan said and rushed out into the blizzard.
